Vytas SunSpiral is a Senior Robotics Researcher in the Intelligent Robotics Group within the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center. .
Born as Thomas Willeke, Vytas SunSpiral assumed his current name when he married his wife, Claire. At that time he formally took 'Vytas' as his first name. Vytas is an old Lithuanian name that is a shortened version of 'Vytautas' -- which can be translated as either "Speaker of Visions" or "Vision of the People." For a last name they chose SunSpiral, Vytas being partially inspired by the sun he featured on a shield he used in Medieval fighting since he was 18 years old.
Vytas was educated at Stanford University, earning a B.A. and M.A. there. He completed his B.A. With Honors in June 1997. His major was "Symbolic Systems," an interdisciplinary major that includes courses from the departments of Philosophy, Psychology, Linguistics, and Computer Science. He also completed a self-designed concentration on robotics and artificial intelligence, with independent research on autonomous robotics, map building in dynamic settings, and hypothesis generation conducted with Dr. Illah Nourbakhsh and Clay Kunz. He earned his M.S. Computer Science in June 1998 from Stanford University, CA, USA. His Masters Advisor was Dr. Oussama Khatib. SunSpiral significantly raised the profile of tensegrity-structured robotics with the Super Ball Bot, an ongoing project that has generated significant publicity and involved institutions outside of NASA, such as University of Berkeley.
