Gómez-Jáuregui, Valentín

Valentín Gómez-Jáuregui is a civil engineer operating in Spain who specializes in tensegrity structure research.

Gómez-Jáuregui's Masters in Architecture thesis completed at Queen’s University (Belfast) was titled
Tensegrity Structures and their Application to Architecture”. It serves as an excellent recent and comprehensive introduction to tensegrity structures (plural better?). The thesis opens with a history of tensegrity, describing the controversies about its origin and etymology . He then surveys tensegrities from a variety of fields including architecture, describing in detail its structural principles, characteristics, advantages and weakness. The survey also describes prominent current works and patents. In the last chapter Gómez-Jáuregui proposes some directions of research and suggests architectural and engineering applications. The thesis was published as a bookin June 2010 (See also Amazon).

Gómez-Jáuregui is also the author of "Tensegridad. Estructuras tensegríticas en Ciencia y Arte" (February 2007), in Spanish (See also Amazon).

Translating Tensegrity into Spanish

Gómez-Jáuregui writes that "tensegrity", as an adjective and as a noun, needs separate words in Spanish. "Tensegridad" is already established as the noun, though Gómez-Jáuregui suggests capitalizing "Tensegridad" to refer to the principle of tensegrity and leaving it lower case to refer to specific implementations. Gómez-Jáuregui also coined "tensegrítico / tensegrítica" for the adjective forms of tensegrity (masculine and feminine). For more information, see his book on tensegrity in Spanish.
